Why is water treatment necessary?

Our water 
Water is the basis of all life on Earth, and clean drinking water is particularly important.Water supply companies supply us with drinking water which is chemically, biologically and hygienically pure, and which conforms to German drinking water regulations as well as DIN 2000 (Deutsches Institut für Normung). The quality of the drinking water is monitored continually and intensely in order to ensure the maximum level of safety for the consumer.

Why do we need to treat drinking water?
Nevertheless, problems can still occur with limescale formation and corrosion, depending on the water quality in the household. The technical requirements on the water and our comfort needs sometimes do not cooincide with the water quality.

The daily household water requirement is approx. 140 litres. Only 3 litres are used for cooking and drinking. The rest is used for washing, cleaning of dishes and clothes etc. and is often heated for this purpose.
Drinking water is generally not treated for these tasks, although it can be adapted to these requirements by means of further treatment in the household.

The water cycle 
Due to the action of sunlight, water evaporates from the world’s oceans, rivers, lakes and vegetation. It rises into the atmosphere, where it forms clouds, before returning to Earth as rain, hail or snow.


Even in the atmosphere, water absorbs impurities in the form of dust and gas. Acidic waste industrial gases, and gases in the air, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, make rain slightly acidic.
The rain first percolates through the upper soil layer, where it absorbs humus matter, decomposition products and carbonic acid. Depending on the composition of the ground, other minerals may also be dissolved and absorbed, for instance calcium, magnesium(lime), nitrates, iron, manganese etc.
This ground water is extracted from underground by waterworks via springs and wells, and sometimes emerges as natural spring water. Different influencing factors become noticeable, depending from where the drinking water is obtained.

The water cycle is now complete.
